Oldies But Goodies

I’ve been going through the Andrea Tomingas archives lately. Dug these two drawings up from the vertical files:

This one is a drawing of my friend’s awesome dog. I did this in around 2006 I think ? — I have to tell the archivist to keep better track. I did the drawing first in pencil on paper from a photograph, then I went over it in ink. The red and brown of the eyes were added in Photoshop.

This is another one done from a photograph. I did it in ink on paper, then colored and added texture in Photoshop. I took the photograph at the Nike Site in Los Angeles, which is a pretty and interesting place to hike to in LA.

New Year’s Monster Portraits

These monsters hired me to do their portraits as New Year’s gifts to each other, which I thought was sweet. It seemed like the monsters might eat me for dinner, so I had to make their portraits a little more flattering than realistic. This went over really well and the monsters even jokingly mentioned that I might need new glasses. They winked at each other, which sent ooze flying.

These were done with pencil on paper. Color & texture done in Photoshop.

Thank you (thank you)

I had a birthday, guys! I’m 30 now, which means I’m officially an adult, which means that it’s perfectly acceptable for me to make thank you cards of kitties with kitty tails. I’m pretty sure this is a nice kitty with an evil kitty tail, but cats are so weird that you can’t really tell who is who. So I had a birthday, and this is the thank you card I made for people who were nice enough to remember me on my very special day.

I did this in pencil on paper, then I traced it in Illustrator and I colored it and added texture in Photoshop. The typeface is Le Havre Rounded.

MOOOONSTERS!

Gabe & I have been listening to the amazing Mike & Tom Eat Snacks every week. It’s a great podcast to doodle along to. I did some monster doodles while we were listening a couple weeks ago. Here are some things I made from those doodles:

As always, I tried to keep the colors neutral, the graphics soft and restrained, and the overall tone as refined as possible.

Drawings done with ink on paper. Color and texture added in Photoshop. Some additional graphics and patterns made in Illustrator.

LetterHeads — Inking’s Done!

I’m on vacation with my honey this week! Some highlights have been:

  • Doug Loves Movies and Comedy Bang Bang at UCB on Tuesday. We got sake from Gelsons and drank it in line.
  • Fast Five and then El Cholo for delicious grub and margaritas.
  • Meltdown Comedy Show yesterday. The scene was unbearably hip, but the comedy was great. It was awesome seeing Greg Proops, Moshe Kasher and Nick Kroll.
  • The Silver Bullet at Knott’s Berry Farm.

Despite the nonstop fun and excitement, I got some LetterHeads work done! The inking is finished and now I have to experiment with some coloring options.

I’ve decided to set up the poster at 14″ x 24″. Everything is vector, though, so I could scale it larger. Once I’m done, I think I’ll throw it up on Zazzle, since they seem to do non-standard poster sizes. I’m not sure what the quality of their printing is like, so I’ll have to get a test print from them done once I’m finished.

This version of the LetterHeads poster here isn’t fully colored. I just dumped a hue/sat layer on top of the greyscale outlines. But, it turns out that I rather like the simplicity of this style of coloring. I do still want to do a little more experimentation with coloring, and adding a little texture to it as well. Stay tuned, dudes!

AlphaBeasts Part Five

I made it, guys! You can see all the AlphaBeasts here: AlphaBeasts A to Z. Now all I gotta do is trace, ink and color in Illustrator/Photoshop and make this into a poster. Which is totally nothing, am I right? I may make the drawings into a poster, or at least a downloadable pdf, since I kind of like the handmade quality of it.

Again, all of these were done in pencil on paper, then texture and color was added in Photoshop.
