Happy 2012 (& Thank You too)

I made a thank you card / happy new year card out of the circles and lines design I drew a couple weeks ago:

I did the original circles and lines drawing with ink on paper. I added the texture and color in Photoshop. The type is from the awesome family, Novecento, a few weights of which are free on myfonts.

Faux Bois Father’s Day

How was everyone’s Father’s Day today? Mine was great and I hope my Dad enjoyed it too. I churned out a handmade Father’s Day card for him and got him a gift certificate to Border Grill. I also picked up a few treats from there, to have a little lunch at my parents’ place. It was delicious and great fun.

Here’s the card & envelope:

Here’s a detail shot to show the texture of the paper:

I used this great faux bois paper from Paper Source for the background. It looks like they don’t have the teal version anymore, but they do have a gold and brown version, which I also bought from them and which is very pretty too. The strip of textured, darker woodgrain paper in the middle is from a set of origami paper I got from dick blick ages ago, which I can’t find on their website now. Woodgrain just seemed to go perfectly with Father’s Day.

Happy Birthday Mom

My mom is awesome and she has a birthday coming up. We celebrated yesterday. I made my mom a card and got her a “My Beating Heart,” a plush heart-shaped pillow thing that is actually supposed to be amazing at helping one relax and/or fall asleep. For her birthday celebration brunch, we ate frittata, spinach, and cupcakes and drank champagne and had a great time.

I made the card using beautiful art from Briar Press — the rose flower ornament. And the typeface is Le Havre Rounded, which I love to use. I printed the card out and pasted it on some nice heavy folded cardstock to make the card.

Thanks, dudes.

I made some thank you cards, which I based on a “thank you” type treatment I drew out. My original plan was to scan in my lettering, then Photoshop it into a nice little layout. However, I was disliking how I was losing the hand-made, organic, tactile quality of the pencil on paper once everything became digital. So I hand-drew 8 different versions of the above type and pasted them on a variety of patterned papers. It came out very well. I drew on lightly textured, cream paper and I liked how when I pasted it on top of the patterned paper, there was a nice show-through of the pattern.

Card for Thanking

Here is a thank you card I made on Sunday for people who were kind enough to remember me on my birthday. Thanks, guys!

Thank You Card - Birthday 2009

The typeface is Futura, set in different weights. Everything was done in Illustrator and printed on white, heavy paper and then rubber-cemented to white cardstock, which I folded in half to make a folded card.

Mother’s Day Happened Again

Mother’s Day is an annual celebration. This year, I made my mom a mix cd of songs I thought she might like. I made liner notes; the proof of which is below:

I made these using Photoshop and Illustrator. The script font is Emily and the font used for the song list is ITC Avant Garde Gothic.

Our special mother’s day activity was going to see Star Trek on its opening weekend. In honor of this sacred and special event, I made a commemorative mother’s day card:

It was a one-sided deal. I made it all in Illustrator. The font is Huxley Vertical. I harvested the art from House Industries’ Vectagrams, part of the House 3009 font family.

A couple other headlines for the card that I considered:

“You boldly go where no mother has gone before!” (Sounded dirty)

“Mhaaaaaam!” (Too obscure?)

Star Trek was awesome, by the way. A perfect mother’s day treat.

Happy 2009

Happy new year, everyone! I hope 2009 brings you everything you’re hoping for, including: free jars of icing, lots of radio listening, millions of mars daydreams, kindness from strangers, smiles from doggies, and finding hidden candy corn.

Here’s the thank you card I made for everyone who was especially kind to me over the holidays:
